The mission of Take Stock in Children is to provide students and their families inspiration through mentoring, support, and scholarships by empowering them to achieve their dreams of an education beyond high school.
Who We Are:
Take Stock in Children serving Lake and Sumter Counties began in 1996 awarding scholarships to 13 area students. Today, TSIC has assisted over 563 Lake and Sumter County Students with tuition scholarships.
How It Works:
In October of every year, Lake Sumter Take Stock in Children begins the recruitment process. The number of scholarships available depends on previous year’s fundraising outcomes. Applications are sent to Middle School Guidance Counselors who nominate 8th grade students who meet the criteria and whom they believe will benefit from the Take Stock in Children program. In order to qualify to receive an application the student must meet the following criteria:
- Student must have a financial need as per the USDA Income Guidelines and be in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program.
- Student must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Student must have a social security number
- Student must show a desire to succeed (an essay and two letters of recommendation are encouraged)
Take Stock in Children Scholarships
Take Stock in Children Scholarships are only available to students who meet standard criteria set by Florida’s Take Stock in Children Program.
- Currently in 6th-9th grades
- Currently enrolled in a Hillsborough County Public School
- Qualify for free or reduced school lunch
- Have a minimum GPA of 2.5
Students who meet these requirements may apply online during open application periods. After preliminary application screenings, the highest scoring students will be selected for an interview with Foundation staff, community volunteers, and HEF Board Members. Students who are deemed promising candidates for the program will be invited to become a Take Stock in Children Scholar.
These students will attend an induction ceremony where they will take a pledge of commitment to stay in school, maintain good grades, and make positive life choices throughout the remainder of their high school education. Students are monitored throughout the academic school years by a Hillsborough Education Foundation College Success Coach who reviews behavior and attendance, and matched with an adult mentor to offer guidance and support to help them stay on the right track for higher education. Upon graduating high school the student will receive his or her scholarship.
