As this is a personal essay, I believe it is best to use something which speaks from your memory.

What do YOU remember about the experience?

A hotdog you ate at a certain stand?

The uncertainty of the times, a look in your parent's faces, whispered words / arguments or tension in the air?

What about the name of the airport you arrived in?

What do you remember clearest about your time in the States as a child? Because you could simply use 'A New House' to describe how everything was ultimately different from what you experienced in your home country.
